The Bible Reading Plans

Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

Time and again, I began reading the Bible in the first chapter of Genesis, yet I never quite reached Revelation’s final chapter - not until I developed a simple tool.

This simple tool helps you read the entire Bible at your own pace, based on your time and commitment. It allows you to track your Bible reading progress through one simple action. As you read each chapter of the Bible, simply mark or highlight it on your Bible Reading Record page.

Download the following PDF file and print it on either single-sided or double-sided paper and keep it in your Bible.

Freely you have received, freely give. Matthew 10:8b

I am certain that all will be blessed by reading the Word of God; there is no doubt about that.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

In addition, there are numerous benefits of this simple Bible Reading Log tool:

  • It allows you to read at your own pace.
  • It enables you to read in any order.
  • It encourages you to keep on going.
  • You always know which chapter in the Bible to read next.
  • Even if your plan derailed for a week or a month, you can move forward from where you left off rather than restart.
  • You can start reading the Bible any day; you don’t have to wait for your New Year’s resolution.

Mathematics of The Bible Reading

It is very simple. There are 39 books in the Old Testament containing total 929 chapters, and there are 27 books in the New Testament containing 260 chapters. All together there are 1,189 chapters in 66 books of the Bible.

Old Testament

New Testament

You might think if I read one book per week, and there are 52 weeks in a year, you can easily finish reading entire Bible in about a year and 3 months. But as you know some books are small (only 1-6 chapters) and some are large (50-150 chapters). If you are an avid reader, it is doable. But a more stream line approach would be to break it down by the chapters. Here are some of the suggestions.

One Year Bible Reading Plans

  1. (1) Simple Bible Reading Program
Read 4 chapters of the Bible every day taking a one day break per week
    52 weeks x 6 days = 312 days
    1189 chapters / 312 days = 3.81 chapters/day --- about 4 chapters/day
Having one break day per week allows you to catch up if you fall behind in any given week.

  2. (2) Easy Bible Reading Program
Read 2 chapters of the Bible Monday to Friday, and 4 Chapters on Saturday and 4 Chapters Sunday
    (52 weeks x 5 days x 2 chapters) + (52 weeks x 2 days x 4 chapters) = 1196 chapters
If you start on the January 1st, you will finish reading the entire Old Testament two/three days prior to the New Year.

  3. (3) The New Testament Reading Program
Read 1 chapter of the New Testament every week Monday to Friday only
    52 weeks x 5 days x 1 chapter = 260 chapters
This plan is easy to read at a very comfortable speed. You will finish reading the entire New Testament in one year. You can start at any time. If you start on July 1st of this year, you will finish on June 30th of the following year.

  4. (4) The Old Testament Reading Program
Read 3 chapters of the Old Testament every day taking one day break per week
    52 weeks x 6 days x 3 chapter = 936 chapters
Having one break day per week allows you to catch up if you fall behind in any given week.
If you start on the January 1st, you will finish reading the entire Old Testament two days prior to the New Year.

Other Bible Reading Plans

  1. (A) One Chapter Reading Program
Simply read one chapter a day.
    1189 chapters / 364 days = 3.26
It will take you about three years and three months to read the entire Bible. With this approach, you can write your Bible reading journal everyday about what God has taught you though this chapter.

  2. (B) Chronological Bible Reading Program
Read the Bible in a Chronological order.
Chronological means “in order of time”.
You can read one chapter a day or a topic a day or follow any of the above mentioned one year reading program.
